He was member of North Beach Surf Life Saving Club. He drowned while taking a surf line out to a dinghy which had helped rescue three girls in distress at Waterman's Bay. He was dragged under and drowned apparently when weed fouled the line, while being pulled ashore.
DEATH NOTICES. RILEY: On Sept. 3. 1954, at Waterman's Bay. Charles Owen, of Leonnard-street, Waterman's Bay, beloved husband of Yvonne and loved daddy of Tommy and Janine: aged 32 years.
RILEY: On Sept. 3, 1954. Charles Owen, beloved younger son of Bishop C. L. and Mrs Riley. of Benidlgo. Victoria loved brother of Bill, Molly and Joan, and grandson of the late Archbishop C. O. L. and the late Mrs. Riley.
RILEY (Charles Owen): Loved son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. V. Webb, and fond brother-in law of Bruce.
He was buried at Karrakatta Cemetery. Cemetery records have his age as 31.
