Nicholas, Jr. was the son of Nicholas and Hannah (Shrimplin) Riley and the brother of William, Isaac, John, Harriet, Eliza, Margaret, Mary, Abraham Shrimplin, Maria Rachel, Hannah, Almira, Susannah, and George. He married Elizabeth Musser or Mercer Jan. 26, 1854, and farmed the land next to his parents' farm in Knox County, Ohio. Their children were Ransom, Martha J., Samuel, George, Carrie, and David. Elizabeth died in 1875. Nicholas was married a second time to Matilda Macmillan Spurgeon.
