Biography

George Clinton Ripley, son of Thomas and Betsey, was born in Oakham 17 April 1812. Thomas’ father, Jepthah and his second wife, Mary/Marcy, also had a son George Leonard Ripley born a few weeks later in Oakham 1 June 1812. This is noted because the births of two men named George Ripley in Oakham in 1812 has caused some confusion and errors on the part of genealogical researchers. However, facts show that George L. Ripley, son of Jephthah and Mary/Marcy, lived many years in Oakham at the same time that George C. Ripley lived in New York. Also, George L. Ripley died in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts 18 March 1897.

George Clinton Ripley as a young man worked in the dry goods business. Around, 1860, he joined the Home Life Insurance and worked his way up to become the president of the company. In 1890, at 78, he resigned from this position. George C. Ripley died at his home at 164 Hicks Street in Brooklyn, New York on October 24, 1895.

The early deaths of Thomas and Betsey (Adams) Ripley caused Guardianship papers to be filed for George C. Ripley. While the answer to the question of where he lived between his mother’s death in 1827 and his marriage in 1841 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, where he was identified as being from “New York” has not been resolved, it is clear from United States Census records and New York State Census Records that the George C. Ripley who lived in Brooklyn, Kings, New York, was born in Massachusetts about 1812. Furthermore, his obituary indicates that when he died in 1895 age 83, he was born in Oakham, Massachusetts. Although two men named George Ripley were born in 1812 in Oakham, Worcester, Massachusetts, uncle and nephew, it can be shown that the uncle, George Leonard Ripley, lived in Oakham at the same time that George Clinton Ripley lived in Brooklyn, Kings, New York. George Leonard Ripley died in Grafton, Worcester, Massachusetts, 18 March 1897, thus eliminating any confusion between the two men.

George Clinton Ripley’s Probate Record names his wife, Hannah B. Ripley; his daughter, Sarah L. (Ripley) Clapp; and his son, George H. Ripley of Burlingame, San Mateo, California. These dependents were listed consistently in the United States and New York Census enumerations of Brooklyn, New York for the household of George Clinton Ripley. In addition, a witness to the will of George Clinton Ripley was his probable maternal relative, Joseph P. Holbrook. His lineage, as well as George Clinton Ripley’s employment at Holbrook & Nelson of New York, founded by his distant relative, Lowell Holbrook, bolsters the evidence of George Clinton Ripley’s maternal line.
