Biography

Joan Risdon, the third child of Tristram Risdon and his wife Pascoe Chafe, was christened at the parish church of St Giles in her parents' home village of St Giles in the Wood on 30 Nov 1612.[1] It is not clear if their second child Joan Risdon, baptised in 1611, had died before this date or if her parents chose to have two daughters named Joan.

By licence issued 10 Nov 1640 at Exeter,[2] on 17 Nov 1640 in the church of St Giles in the Wood she married James Hearle, who lived at Corffe in the nearby parish of Tawstock.[3] They had just one daughter, Joan.[4]

Her mother, in her will dated 21 Apr 1646 and proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 10 Sep 1647, made her son-in-law James Hearle one of the overseers and left to "my daughter Mrs Joane Hearle all my best woollen and lynnen apparel and my wedding-ring" together with to her grandchild Joan Hearle "a bearing blanket and all my child bed linnen".[5]

James Hearle was buried in St Peter's church at Tawstock on 4 Nov 1660,[3] and Joan on 27 Dec 1662, her monument referring to the "most excellently pious Gentlewoman Mrs Johan Hearle Wife of Mr James Hearle".[3]

Their daughter Joan, who became the second wife of Edward Lovett (1627-1702), was the last living descendant of her grandfather Tristram Risdon and inherited his property of Winscott at St Giles in the Wood.[6] She was buried in Tawstock church on 4 Jan 1709, her monument stating "Here lyeth the body of Johan the second wife of Edward Lovet of this Parish Esqr who departed this life the first day of January 1708/9 in the 67th year of her age".[3]
