Biography
Catherine (Rivers) Binford is a part of US Black heritage.
Catherine was born in 1846 in Brunswick County, Virginia, to Lucy Ann Pritcher and Fred Rivers. At the time of her birth, she and her mother (father's status unknown) were enslaved; the owner was William Samford who was a planter in Brunswick County. William emancipated Lucy Ann and all her children, including Catherine, at his death in 1855 (the emancipation deed was not executed until 1861). In 1865 Catherine married James Binford in Brunswick County. They were living in Brunswick County and had at least 5 children together when Catherine passed away in either 1879 or 1880 from "Congestion Chills" per the 1880 Mortality Census.
Research Notes
US Mortality Census gives date of death as Jan 1880, however Virginia Death Index gives it as Jan 1879.
