Robert was born about 1849, shortly after his parent's arrival in New Zealand. He was the son of Joshua Rix and Martha Nightingale. Robert married Emma Roland Wilson Reynolds in 1875 and the couple lived in Addington, Christchurch, where Robert was a storekeeper.
He passed away about 1902, aged 53 and he is buried at the Sydenham Cemetery, Sydenham, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand.
