Biography

Andrew was born in 1710. He was the son of Archibald Roane and Jennett Unknown. He passed away about 1768.

He came from Granshaw, Ireland in 1739 and settled in Derry Township, Lancaster County (now Dauphin County), Pennsylvania. Andrew was a weaver by trade.

Andrew b. 1713 married Margaret Walker. Their children were:

  1. Margaret b. 1737 Ireland m. 1755 James Barnett
  2. William b. 1740 Pennsylvania moved to Tenn and died there
  3. Sally (Sarah) b. 1743
  4. Jannett b. 1753 m. Thomas Foot
  5. Archibald b. 1759 d. Jan 4, 1819 m. Anne Campbell
  6. Hugh b. 1765 d. May 1825 m. May 26, 1792 Hannah Calhoun

Andrew died in 1768, and just a few years later Margaret died. There were at least three children under the age of 21 yr of at the time of Margaret's death.

Jannett was married soon afterward, leaving Arcihibald and Hugh. These orphans were cared for by Rev. John Roane, their uncle.

Legend has it that Archibald was an industrious student, but Hugh was very spoiled. There is an account of Archibald in the "Dictionary of American Biographies XV" pages 640-641. He was born in 1759 and died Jan 4, 1819.

When he was 8 yrs of age, his father Andrew died. His Uncle John said that he got as good an education as possible. He eventually studied law and moved to Liberty Hill, Rockbridge County, Virginia, where he met and married Anne Campbell.

Archibald became a close friend of Andrew Jackson, and both were lawyers who also became attorney generals of two federal districts in Tenn. In 1801 Archibald became the second governor of Tenn. Archibald and his wife had 9 children.

Note: Due to various spellings of Roane (Roan, Rhone, Rowin, etc., this may be a duplicate.
