John was born in Virginia in about 1841, and was likely the son of Nancy Roby/Robey and Amanuel Roby/Robey/Rolley. He was living at East Pike Run, Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1850 with with his parents, two siblings and two possible half siblings. He was recorded as 9 years old and born in Virginia. He did not appear again after 1850.
