Biography

Anne (Annie) Minerve Roddy was born in Thibodaux Louisiana on October 18, 1835[1]. Her parents were Thomas Eloy Roddy Sr and Rosalie Elizabeth Carel (Karol). She had at least three siblings: Jacques, Thomas Eloy and Marie Catherine.

Minerve, as she was known, married Nathaniel Chestnut July 22, 1852, in Houma Louisiana. The couple had ten children.

She passed on April 10, 1915. Her obituary read: Mrs. Minerva Roddy Chestnut one of the oldest and best-known residents of Algiers, died Saturday night after an illness of a fortnight. She leaves fifty-three descendants, all residents of this locality. There are five daughters, two sons, twenty-six grandchildren and nine- great-grandchildren. Mrs. Chestnut was 75 years old, born in Houma of the well-known Roddy family, she spent her early life in the northern part of the state. After her marriage to Nathaniel Chestnut, she removed to Algiers, and had resided there fifty years. Her surviving children are Mrs. Charles Vogt, Mrs. F. Bennerfield, Mrs. C. Buhler, Mrs. C.H. Hoke, Mrs. J. Traub, and Randell and Roger Chestnut. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4 o’clock from the residence of her son-in-law, Frank Bennerfield, 535 Bouny street. Rev. Mr. Brown, of the Methodist Church will conduct the services. Interment will be in McDonoghville Cemetery. [2]
