Biography

Her birth year could have been 1848 or 1847. Burl Perry Crauswell who married Martha A. Rollo, moved from Pike County to Jefferson County sometime after 17 Sep 1860. In Jun 1870 the family was living in northwest Jefferson County. By Jun 1880 the family is in Arkadelphia, Blount (now Cullman County), where they both lived out the remainder of their lives. It appears Burl owned land which he farmed and for a short while worked as a Clerk for Drennen Brothers, per the 1888 Birmingham City Directory. Burl and Martha are buried in Arkadelphia UMC Cemetery as are their children William (gravesite unknown), Sam and Laura, and several of their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Several family members recalled that Martha Rollo smoked a pipe and she also had a small drink of whiskey every morning. Her grandchildren called her Mammy Crauswell.
