Keats-Rohan attributes Clay (EYC 5) with having convinced that the father of Richard and William de Rullos was named Ilbert, and had been a tenant of Earl Hugh of Chester in Domesday Book. The proposal is actually older and was for example mentioned by Tait in his edition of the Cheshire Domesday Book, and further back it was stated by Ormerod.
