Louise arrived in the USA with her mother, Christina Richt at Castle Garden NY on August 25, 1883. She met her husband, Matthew Guhl in the US as far as we know. After Louise and Matthew married, they owned and operated a butcher shop in Germantown, PA. The family lived above the butcher shop. My grandfather, Albert Guhl, recalled how not only did his mom raise all the kids cook all the food but every night she washed the butcher aprons by hand to remove all the blood and pressed them for the next day. Louise also worked in the butcher shop, cutting meat and waiting on customers while her husband, Matthew was out delivering meats with his wagon and draft horse. The customers especially loved my great-grandmother cutting their meat as they thought she gave them generous cuts and very good meat!

My mother's cousin recalls that Louise always finished the evening with a cold beer! I found this quite funny but yet, drinking beer in Germany is like drinking water so it makes sense.

After Matthew died, Louisa moved in with her daughter Louise and her husband Thomas Higgins and their two sons for the rest of her life. It was one of these grandsons whom recalled the evening beer drinking of his grandmother.

My Aunt Lois loved both her grandmothers, saying they were both wonderful women.
