Biography

Scottish flag
Christian (Ross) McRae was born in Scotland.

Christian (also Christina) Ross, daughter of Donald Ross (bef.1778-aft.1816) and Margaret (Fraser) Ross (bef.1780-aft.1796), was born 1796-1797 in Loth, Sutherland, Scotland, although the 1871 census places her birth in the next Parish south, at Clyne.

James McRae (abt.1794-1884) and Christian Ross were married on 28 September 1816 in Mr David Gellatly's house, Minister of Relief Chapel Ship Row, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Banns had been posted on 9 September 1816 at Saint Nicholas Blotter and Scroll, Aberdeen, Scotland.[1][2]

Children from the marriage of James McRae and Christian Ross were:

In 1841 Christina (40), James (45yo Journeyman Cooper) and children Margaret (15), Peter (14), William (12), Alexander (8), and John (5) were in Whitehills, Boyndie, Banffshire. There son, 22yo James (James McRae (1819-1858)) was not with them in the 1841 census.[4]

In 1851 the McRaes were in Shore Street, Whitehills. James (56) was still a Journeyman Cooper, born in Urquhart, RossShire. Fifty-four year old Christian has birthplace of Loth, SutherlandShire. With them were their daughter Margaret (27), sons Peter (25), William (22), Alexander (18), and John (15). Also with them was their 8 year old grandson William McRae (William McRae (abt.1843-1915)), son of James McRae (James McRae (1819-1858)). William's birthplace was listed as Forfarshire, Monifieth. Their neighbours were the Joiners, Thomas, his wife Jean, daughter Ann (19) and son John (16).[5]

In 1861 the McRaes were at 13 Seafield St, Whitehills, but their neighbours were still the Joiners, so perhaps the street name had changed. James at age 65 was still a Journeyman Cooper and with him were 64yo Christian, 35 yo Margaret, 28yo Alexander, and 24yo John. Also present were James and Christian's grandchildren, 5yo Christian Milton, Margaret's illegitimate daughter, and 2yo James McRae, listed as Visitor but Peter McRae and Jessie McBain's son. This was probably the James McRae from Queensland, Australia, who paid for his grandparents monument in Boyndie cemetery. Thomas and Jane Joiner were neighbours at 14 Seafield Street, with their widowed daughter Ann Lovie. Ann had married Alexander Lovie in 1852, who had died in 1856.[6]

In the 1871 census the McRaes were at 12 Seafield St and the Joiners at 13, but this was probably a census taker mistake, as in 1881 they were back to 13 and 14 respectively. Seventy-six year old James McRae was a Cooper and 74yo Christian's place of birth listed as Clyne, Sutherland, which is just south of Loth. With them were their sons William (32) and John (29). [7] Their neighbours, Thomas and Jean Joiner, had their 9yo grandson, Thomas McRae with them.[8] Thomas was born on 2 January 1862, well after Ann's husband's death, and was registered as Thomas Joiner. In 1871 and subsequently he was known as Thomas McRae, suggesting one of James and Christian McRae's sons was the father. Thomas McRae died in 1948 in Banff aged 86.

Christian McRae (nee Ross) died of Senilitas (senility) on 5 March 1878 in Whitehills, Boyndie, Banffshire, Scotland, aged 82. Her son-in-law John SMART was informant to the death registration.[9]

Christian was buried in the Churchyard of Boyndie, Whitehills, Boyndie, Banffshire, Scotland. A granite memorial stone was erected in the Boyndie Churchyard Cemetery, Whitehills, by their grandson James McRae (possibly Peter and Jessie's son) from Queensland, Australia to both his grandparents:
