Local Manufacturer Falls Dead in Bridgeport, Conn., Hotel
Member of Big Philadelphia Automobile Concern and Society Man succumbs
Stricken with a sudden attack of heart disease, Edward K. Rowland, of Radnor, Pa., a widely known club man and prominent in local society circles, dropped dead in a hotel at Bridgeport, Conn., yesterday, according to dispatches received from that city. He had left on a business trip to New England on Monday morning.
News of the sudden death of Mr. Rowland came as a shock to members of his family and a large circle of his friends. Saturday and Sunday he had spent with his family at their handsome home, "Red Rose", at Radnor, and visiting friends. He was apparently in the best of health at that time.
Mr. Rowland, who was forty-five years old, was a son-in-law of Charles Custis Harrison, former Provost of the University of Pennsylvania. He was connected with the firm of William & Harvey Rowland, manufacturers of automobile springs, at Tacony and Lewis streets, this city. It was in the interests of this firm that he made the trip to Bridgeport, reaching that city yesterday morning.
According to reports received from Bridgeport, Mr. Rowland had not registered at the hotel at the time of his death. He was stricken in one of the restrooms of the establishment and collapsed on the floor. Charles A. Voos, of New York City, heard the sound of his fall, and discovered Rowland's body on the floor. A physician, summoned hastily to the hotel, declared that heart trouble had caused his death. Identification was made by means of the letters in Rowland's pocket.
Members of the young man's family left this city for Bridgeport last night to bring back the body. His wife, formerly Miss Esther White Harrison, is prostrated with grief at the Radnor home. Two children also survive Rowland, who was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Rowland, of Chestnut Hill.
Rowland was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in the class of 1891. He was at one time a member of the First City Troop. He also belonged to the Society of Sons of the Revolution, the Radnor Hunt Club, Philadelphia Club and Philadelphia Country Club. He played a leading part in horse show circles and was a popular member of Main Line society. Arrangements for the funeral services of Mr. Rowland will not be completed until the body is brought back to this city.
