Lavoslav Stjepan Ružička rođen je u Vukovaru (koji je tada bio dio Austro-Ugarske) 13. rujna 1887. Bio je sin Stjepana Ružičke i Amalije Sever.
Lavoslavu je otac umro kad je imao četiri godine, a majka je obitelj preselila u Osijek. Studirao je u Karlsruheu u Njemačkoj i stekao doktorat iz kemije 1910. Zatim se preselio u Zürich u Švicarskoj i promijenio svoje ime u Leopold.
Leopold je oženio Annu Hausmann 1912. Dobio je švicarsko državljanstvo 1917.
Leopld je 1939. godine dobio Nobelovu nagradu za kemiju.
Leopold je oženio Gertrud Acklin 1951.
Leopold je umro u Mammernu u Švicarskoj 26. rujna 1976. i pokopan je u Friedhof Flunternu u Zürichu.[1]
