Biography

Martin was born in 1732. Martin Rush ... He passed away in 1827.

The following was copied from Find A Grave: Memorial #176328668 for Abigail Rush - his daughter-in-law, not his wife.
Information obtained from Library and Archives Canada (Reel M-365 of the 'British Headquarters Papers, New York, 1774-1783' or the 'Carleton Papers') includes the New York muster roll of 26 Aug 1781, showing Martin Rush employed as a carpenter at Horn's Hook, under the orders of Captain Alexander Mercer, Commanding Engineer. As a refugee originally from New Jersey, he received relief payments from 30 Sep 1782 (when he was listed with a wife and two children) to Sep 1783, whereupon it is believed he was evacuated from New York to New Brunswick on 08 September.
The document, Property Confiscations, Bergen County (Great Britain, Public Record Office, Audit Office, Class 12, Volume 85, folios 43-46), a list of the names of “…all those persons whose property was confiscated in the several counties of the State of New Jersey, for joining the Army of the King of Great Britain &c. as returned to the Auditors Office, previous to the first day of May 1787” includes the names of Conrad Frederick and Martin Rush.
By the time of his arrival in Upper Canada (1794), he claimed a wife (increasingly believed to be, from family Bible reference, Marsdein Kopf) and four children. A fifth child, Elizabeth, had previously married Conrad Frederick in the States.
His son, Martin Jr. (1761-1823), also connected to the Engineers Department and a Loyalist in his own right, is interred here, and likely his wife, Abigail Lockwood (1769-1857). While not certain, it is reasonable to assume that Martin Sr. and his wife are also here.
