Biografía

Bandera mexicana
Jesús Salcido nació en México.

(English Version below)

Biography

Mexican flag
Jesús Salcido was born in Mexico.

José was born on the 8th of October 1884 and the next day in San Pablo, Balleza. He was born to Donaciano Salcido and Raquel Prieto, their firstborn child of at least seven. [1] [2]

His father immigrated to Texas on the 10th of June 1896 by walking over the bridge when Jesús was only 11 years old. Jesús himself either came with him or followed shortly afterwards on the 14th. [3] He likely resided with his parents for a few years in El Paso. There he would meet his future wife, Pilar Jimenez, and they would marry on the 13th of September 1905. [4] Together they had ten children - Isabel (1907-1982), Juana (1909-1982), Leonarda (1910-1996), Ricardo (1912-1961), Maria de la Luz (1914-2009), Amelia (1917-2013), Jose Moises (1918-1997), Antonio (1921-2001), Consuelo (1922-1998), and Hector (1924-1924).

They lived in Smelter, Texas where Jesús worked as a labourer in a cement plant through 1920 for just over 15 years. [5] By 1921 they moved to Los Angeles. [6]

On Valentine’s Day 1924, they would have their last child, Hector Salcido. [7] However, both his wife Pilar and his newborn son Hector would die shortly afterwards.

Pilar passed away on the third of March at 7:20 P.M. in a hospital in Alhambra, Los Angeles less than three weeks later. Her autopsy revealed that she died from a combination of “acute dilation of the heart” (enlargement and weakness of the left ventricle) and gallstones, both of which either caused or worsened by her pregnancy. [8] Hector was then hospitalised on the first of May and would remain there for just over two weeks. Finally he passed away on the 16th from “acute intestinal indigestion” and malnutrition. He was buried the next day in the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel Cemetery. [9]

From then on, he would raise his remaining nine children as a single father. His eldest daughters slowly began to move out as they got married, beginning with Juana, then Isabel, then Lucy. [10] By 1940 only four of his children remained, Leonarda, Amelia, Antonio, and Consuelo. However, he also lived with his granddaughter, Sylvia Rodriguez. She was Leonarda’s daughter, born in 1936, and likely lived with Jesús for those four years. [11]

In November of the same year, he would remarry to a woman named Hilaria Enriquez. [12] They evidently already had one child together - Jesúsita (1940-2000) - born in June several months before they married. She was likely named after Jesús himself. Afterwards they had one more child, Manuel Richard (1942-?). [13] [14]

At some point during the decade, he moved from 306 San Marino Avenue to 4474 Florizel St. He lived there with his wife Hilaria, three of his stepchildren Angelita, Joe, and Rosie Alvarado - Hilaria’s children from her first marriage - and their two children together. Hilaria then passed away on the 27th of May 1956 at the age of 53 after a three day stay in the Los Angeles County General Hospital. He buried her five days later on the first of June in Calvary Cemetery. [15] His son Ricardo also preceded him in death on the 12th of September 1961. He died from a myocardial infarction as a complication of rheumatic heart disease and subsequent arteriosclerosis and mitral insufficiency. [16]

Finally he passed away on the 18th of March 1967 and was buried beside his mother in San Gabriel Mission Cemetery. [17] [18] [19] He was survived by ten children, eight step-children, and over 30 grandchildren at the time of his death.

Research Notes

Have not yet investigated any Mexican military records, the degree of Jesús’ family's involvement in the revolution - if any - is unknown. Tomlinson-2311 15:55, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
