Biography

ECATUR -- Mary E. Cummins, 85, of Decatur, formerly of Beecher City, died 9:24 p.m. Wednesday (March 28, 2001) in Decatur Memorial Hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in Kaskaskia Church of the Brethren, Beecher City, with Becky Swarms officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services in the church. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery, Beecher City. Kull Funeral Home, St. Elmo, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Arthritis Foundation, American Lung Association or donor's choice.

Mary Estella Cummins was born July 8, 1915, in Centralia, the daughter of Clarence and Rosa Younker Salmons. She was a member of Kaskaskia Church of the Brethren, a charter member of Fayette County Homemakers Extension and a former cook for the Wright's Corner Grade School. She was very active in genealogy research and was a beautician most of her life. She had shops in Brownstown, Altamont and her home, beginning in 1949 and working until her retirement in 1985. She married Orin G. Cummins Oct. 8, 1934, in her parents home, in Loudon Township, Beecher City. He preceded her in death Jan. 29, 1989.

Surviving are her son, Robert (Sharon) Cummins of Chipley, Fla.; daughter, Mary Elizabeth Swarms of Decatur; sisters-in-law, Rella Salmons of Brownstown; Iva Dean Salmons of Gays; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son, Orin Gussie Cummins, Jr.; son-in-law, Troy Swarms; brothers, Clarence and Oral; and infant brother, Delbert Salmons.
