Christian Gotthilf Salzmann was born in Sömmerda in 1744 as son of pastor Johann Christian Saltzmann and his wife Rahel Sibylla Margaretha nee Braun. He became a pastor like his father, first serving in Rohrborn, and from 1772 at the Andreas parish in Erfurt. He married Sophia Magdalena Schnell of Schloßvippach with whom he had fifteen children. In 1784, the family moved to the estate of Schnepfenthal near Waltershausen where he established an educational institute for boys of high social status. Widowed in 1810, he died at Gut Schnepfenthal in 1811.
