I am the youngest of four children born in Swinton, Lancashire, still living and working in Cumbria
Before 1988, knowledge of my family history was limited to my immediate family, grandparents and a handful of Aunts, Uncles & Cousins. My eldest sister had begun research on the Johnson's & Rimmer's of Churchtown near Southport on my maternal grandmothers side a couple of years earlier. The Howard family of that village, we were told, were apparently connected to the Howard Dukes of Norfolk. Doris Frost had dismissed that family myth as a fantasy as the ducal family were Roman Catholics and said her own family were Anglican and were probably of Viking origin.
As far as my Dad was concerned, his family came from County Durham on the east coast (his aunt Alice was born at Shotton Colliery in that county) Later, I was told by my step-mother Jackie that there had been a brother that had died in the war. I was able to establish later that it was Alice's younger sister that had died the year before Alice was born in 1912.
In 1988, I met a woman at work who was part of a group of war pensioners and we quickly established that she was a first cousin of my grandfather Arthur Sampson. Lily Hall (who died the following year) wrote down her family knowledge and I still have her letter. It's this meeting that led me to start my own research.
My Dad's mother Mary Cawley had no interest in family history but her cousin was able to impart a little information on their ancestral surnames and a pointer towards County Cavan, Ireland. Research leads to Cavan, Fermanagh, Roscommon, Tipperary, & Westmeath, with Dublin & Antrim on my Mum's side
Researching the two branches of Sampson's from Harkstead, Kersey, and Playford in Suffolk has become my main preoccupation and the main reason for my interest in DNA surname projects

The England Project Leaders check-in with the members every six months to see how people are getting on. How are you doing? I notice you've dropped out of the Orphan Trail. Is there a particular reason for this? I'd love to have your feedback.
One requirement for membership in the project is that you contribute to a team at least once every six months. Are you willing to rejoin the Trail or would you prefer to leave the project for now and focus on other things? If you do the latter you'd be most welcome to rejoin later on.
Please respond to me via e-mail.
Many thanks,
Susie, England Project Leader :-)
