Biography

Uriah Sanders is an American Patriot (see sources below)

Uriah and Eliza had 3 children. Robert Peter Sanders, George Sanders, Nancy Uriah Sanders. George ran away from home at the age of 14. He went into the Civil War and was never heard from again.

The Kemp Sketch SANDERS, URIAH -- Came to Texas in 1835. In Headright Certificate No. 4 issued to him February 15, 1838 for one league and one labor of land by the Board of Land Commissioners of Austin County it is certified that he came to Texas before March 2, 1836. Had he arrived before May 2, 1835 this would have been stated in the certificate. he is known to have been in Texas in 1835 for on November 9, of that year he received title to one-fourth of a league of land in Robertson's Colony situated in the present County of McLennon. On an original roll of Captain William W. Hill's company at muster April 11, 1836, Mr. Sanders is shown as having been recruited by Captain Philip H. Coe at Asa Mitchell's home in Washington County, March 11 1836. He is shown as having been born in London County, Virginia in 1811. He was 5 feet, 3 inches high; of dark complexion; had grey eyes and brown hair. He was a farmer.

Mr. Sanders was issued Bounty Certificate No. 4344, October 1, 1838 for 320 acres of land for serving in the army from March 1 to June 1, 1836 His San Jacinto Donation Certificate No. 1086 for 640 acres of land was issued November 17, 1840.

Mr. Sanders was living in Austin County August 28, 1841 when he sold his headright land which had been surveyed in Montgomery County to David Lawrence.

Uriah was born about 1811.

• Uriah Sanders in Austin (Texas) Colony Pioneers, Image 200. Uriah Sanders fought in the battle of San Jacinto. (Dixon & Kemp page 246) and he originally settled in Washington County on New Years Creek and was a neighbor of the McNees, Alcorns, Harbours, Pankeys, Fosters, and Halls. (Swisher). After the revolution he was granted land in Caldwell County, and may have removed to the section.
