Biography

Elias Ben Yahuda Sanders was born on the 14th September 1904 in Świętokrzyskie Slopnice, Galicia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (currently Poland).^[1] He was the son of Leon Sanders^[2] and Jetti Horn.

He immigrated to the United States from Galicia in 1921 when he was 16 years old. [Passenger List States 17.] He traveled alone and had only $25.^[1]

Eliasz Gitman immigrated on 5 June 1921 in Ellis Island, New York City, New York; he sailed from Antwerp aboard the ship "Lapland".^[3]

Elias applied for naturalization in 1923 in New York.^[4] On 14 Feb 1928 he was admitted as a citizen of the United States of America.^[1]

Elias (age 30) married Dora Glassberg (age 21) on 28 July 1934 in Bronx, New York.^[2] Elias and Dora were the parents of Bernie Sanders.^[1]

In 1940, Eli (age 36), Dorothy (27) and their five year old son lived in Brooklyn, New York City, New York; Eli worked as wholesale salesman.^[5]

He died on the 4th August of 1962 and is buried in Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Queens, New York.^[6]
