Walter was born on 19 November 1856 in Islington, Middlesex, England. He was the son of Charles James Sanderson and Christian Lucy (Norman) Benningfield.^[1]

In the 1881 census Walter (age 24) was living in Watford, Hertfordshire, England.^[3]

In May 1887 Walter (age 30) was living in Westminster, Middlesex, England, United Kingdom. 21 Carburton St (occupation: jeweller)

In the 1891 census Walter (age 34) was living in St Marylebone, London, England. Jewellers assistant^[4]
