Quartermaster Abel Sands served with British Legion during the American Revolution.
Abel was born in 1758, probably a son of George Sands and Jemima Smith, and brother to Edward Sands, the Loyalist who relocated to Saint John (New Brunswick) after the Revolutionary War.
Abel enlisted as a private, was promoted to corporal, then sergeant, and finally commissioned as Quarter Master in the British Legion, serving from 1778 to the end of the war, initially in Captain David Kinlock’s troop of cavalry. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11] Following the departure of Captain David Kinloch, command of the Troop passed to Captain Nathaniel Vernon.[12][13] Abel was subsequently commissioned as Quarter Master in Captain Francis Gildart's Troop[14][15][16][17][18][19]
Following the peace, he remained in New York[20][21][22], married, and raised a family. He passed away in 1821.[23]

On April 9, 1804, Abel Sands swears that he is a British subject: that during the American Revolutionary War he served in one of His Majesty's Corps of Cavalry, the British Legion, as a Quarter Master and has ever since received Half-Pay as such, and is residing in the State of New York.
