By 1850, Elizabeth Hart had left Theophilus (age 58) a widower with 9 children ranging in ages from 4 to 23.[1]

After the death of his wife, Elizabeth Hart, in 1849, Theophilus married Absilla Brady (1815-1890) before 1852.[2] They are noted as having the following children:

  1. Thomas Sauls (b. 1840)
  2. Mary Ann Sauls (b. 1844)
  3. Laura A. Sauls (b. 1847)
  4. Martin E. Sauls (b. 1852)

All children are listed with their last name at birth as "Sauls." Only Martin was born after the marriage of Theophilus and Absilla. Two possible answers:

  1. They were having an affair throughout his first marriage
  2. Theophilus adopted Absilla's children and made them his own.

In the 1870 Census, a child from his first marriage is living with him, Absilla and a child from his second marriage.[3]
