Biography

Alexander Savine was born on 26 April 1881 in Belgrade, Serbia.[1][2] He was the son of Dragoljub Jimitch and Agnes Brecan.[3]

He studied composition with Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac in Belgrade, Serbia, and studied singing with Pauline Lucca at the Vienna Conservatory. He was an opera conductor in Berlin from 1905 to 1907. From 1908 to 1912, he taught singing at the Academy of Music in Winnipeg, Canada. He was head of the opera department at the Institute of Musical Art in New York City from 1922 to 1924. In 1929, he began teaching music in Chicago, Illinois.[4]

He composed symphonies and operas, including "Xenia" and "The Diplomat." He conducted the Geneva (Switzerland) Philharmonic, the London Symphony, and the Festival of Grand Operas in Zurich.[5][6] He worked with the Serbian singing society Branko Radichevich, and they won the Serbian Singing Federation National Championship in the 1936 to 1938 festivals.[7] He was choirmaster at the Serbian Orthodox Church.[8]

He married opera and concert singer Lillian Blauvelt on 27 July 1914 in Vienna, Austria.[9]

He died on 19 January 1949.[10][11][12][13][14]
