Biography

Laura Lavonne (aka Vonie) Scalf was born about 1860 or 1861 and was the oldest child of Jesse Scalf and Clarissa Brown. Vonie, as the family knew her married Andrew Jackson Rector and they were the parents of four children. Nothing is known of these children at this time. Vonie was remembered by her nieces (daughters of her brother John Wesley) as a very gentle and kind aunt. One of the daughters of John Wesley, brother of Lavonne was named for her aunt. Her husband Andrew was remembered by the nieces as one of their favorite uncles.

Lavonne Scalf Berry, niece of Lavonne Scalf Rector and Andrew, stated that Andrew Merckie Rector son of Andrew and Vonie was still living in a nursing home in the early 1990’s. A descendent of Andrew’s sister states that Andrew (the son) was named Andrew Audram Rector. We have not found any information on this.

As noted below, Andrew is listed as Merckie A. Rector in 1900 and Andrew M. in 1910. He is listed as Andrew in 1920 and by 1930 is no longer in the home.

Andrew Jackson Rector (the father) was listed as Andrew J. in 1910 and 1920 but listed as Andrew A. in 1930. This may be where the confusion is.

Andrew Merckie Rector (the son) was known to the family of Georgia Nell Scalf Wheelock as “Kidd” Rector. Another cousin also referred to Andrew as “Kidd” Rector.
