Biography

William Scarf was born in 1831. He arrived in Timaru with his wife Letitia and two children, also named Letitia (3) and William (inf.) on the ship Strathallan in early 1859. His brother Robert and his wife Jane were also on the voyage, as was Letitia’s brother Robert.

William and Letitia had at least four more children in Timaru before William was widowed in 1876.

He passed away in 1905.

An old identity passed away yesterday in the person of Mr. Wm. Scarf, sen., of Saltwater Creek. Mr Scarf was an immigrant by the Strathallan, 46 years ago, to Timaru, and has lived here practically ever since. Mr Scarf has owned a large number of properties in the town ; “Scarf's livery stables” were well known in the early history of the town; and Mr Scarf had a butchery for many years. He was in the employ of the Levels County Council for a long time, till quite recently. Mr Scarf was a generous and hard-working man, and was much liked by the many persons who knew him as a friend or an acquaintance. His two sons are in business in Timnru, and he left four daughters—Mrs Walker, of Wellington, Mrs Tunney, of Petone, Mrs S. Hilton, and Mrs F. Tasker, of Timaru.^[1]
