Birth & Baptism
Caspar Schipp was baptised on 25 Nov 1792 in the Eltville Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul [German: Die katholische Pfarrkirche St. Peter und Paul]. He was a son of Heinrich Schipp, a vineyard worker [Latin: Vinitoris], later a winemaker [German: Winzner und Weingärdner], and his second wife Catharina (probably born Hammer but possibly Müller). His parents lived in Eltville, a town on the Rhine River about 13 km from Mainz. He was named for his godfather Caspar Krauss.[1][2][3]

25 [Nov 1792] Casparus, f. l. Henrici Schipp, Vinitoris, et Catharina, nata Müllerin [underlined and above in a different handwriting: "Hammer?"], Conjugum, levavit Casparus Krauss

Eltville (from Alta Villa, Latin for "high estate, high town", corrupted to Eldeville, Elfeld and later Eltville) is now a town in the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis in the Regierungsbezirk of Darmstadt in Hesse, Germany but it was part of the Holy Roman Empire when Caspar was born. Then as now, Eltville was a major wine producing centre.[4]

Marriage
On 13 February 1820, Caspar married Ludovica Holz (also known as Ludovica Kempenich or similar) in Kiedrich.[5] Ludovica was a servant girl in Eltville prior to their marriage.

Original Text:
Translation:
February | 13 [1820] | Caspar Schipp | born in Eltville 25 November 1792 | Catholic, single, resident in Eltville, wine-grower | [son of] Heinrich Schipp, vintner and wine-grower in Eltville and his wife Catharian Hammer, resident here | Ludovica Holz | born in Kiedrich 16 March 1799 | Catholic, single, servant girl in Eltville | daughter of Magdalene Holz, resident of Stephanshausen, Rudesheim [Rüdesheim] district || [banns read] 6, 10, 13 February | dismissed 13 February to Kiedrich.[7]

Ludovica's family name is uncertain. For example, the Eltville church records for this marriage show the bride as "Ludovica Holz", daughter of Magdalene Holz, a resident of Stephanshausen, Rudesheim. Although not explicitly stated, this implies Ludovica was illegitimate. However, other sources show the bride's name as Ludovica Kempenich or similar (one transcribed record on Familysearch shows "Ludovika Krenzerich";[8] another shows "Ludovika Kenzmich").[9] The Eltville family book infers Caspar was twice married - first to Ludovica Kempenich (shown as the mother of five children) and later to Luise Holz (shown as the mother of the three youngest children).[1] However, Ludovica and Luise were almost certainly the same person. She was probably baptised Holz but used the family name Kempenich (Phillip Kempenich was probably her father or stepfather).

Caspar and Ludovica Holz / Kempenich baptised eight children in Eltville:

  1. Magdalena Schipp (1820-1898) (Klein)
  2. Catharina Schipp (1822-1911) Later Catharina Schmidt. Married Anton Schmitt in Eltville on 28 April 1849; emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales onboard the Harmony with her sister Rufina; arrived in Port Jackson on 23 Sep 1849. Died 30 May 1911, Mudgee, New South Wales.
  3. Anna Maria Schipp (1825-1831)
  4. Thomas Schipp (1827-1900) Emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales onboard the Parland; arrived Port Jackson on 5 Jul 1849. Died 27 May 1900, Brisbane, Queensland.
  5. Rufina Simmer Schipp (1830-1915) Later Rufina Simmer Gardoll. Emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales as wife of Conrad Gardoll onboard the Harmony, her sister Catharina travelled on the same voyage; arrived in Port Jackson on 23 Sep 1849; married Conrad Gardoll in 1849 in Sydney. Died 1 Jun 1915, Sydney.
  6. Eva Schipp (1833-1907) Later known as Eva Hogan. Married Martin Meth in Neudorf in 1852. Emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales as wife of Martin Meth onboard the Reiherstieg; arrived in Port on 5 Aug 1852. Her uncle Martin Schipp and his family were also on board. Separated from husband shortly after arrival. Second partner/husband was James Harding Hogan. Died Asfield, New South Wales.
  7. Johann Schipp (1836-1837)
  8. Christian Schipp (1838-1897) Emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales with his parents onboard the Wilhelmsburg in 1855; married Barabara McNair 17 Apr 1876 in Menindee, New South Wales. Died Kalgoorlie in the Colony of Western Australia in 1897.

Migration to Colony of New South Wales

By 1855, four of their children and Caspar's nephew (Martin Schipp (1821-1882)) had left Eltville for a new life in the young Colony of New South Wales, now a state of Australia.

Caspar, his wife Louise and their youngest son Christian followed them in 1855 onboard the Wilhelmsburg which sailed from Hamburg on 1 May 1855.[10]

Some researchers show the couple initially joined their daughters on the goldfields near Mudgee in western New South Wales. Later, Casper and Louise moved to Red Bank near Mudgee where they became market gardeners.[11]

Caspar Schipp died aged 77 years on 10 August 1869 at Red Bank, Mudgee. An inquest into his death found he died of natural causes.[11][12]

Research Notes

  1. "dismissed" here is a technical term, meaning that, after no objections were raised at the three readings of banns in Eltville, the Eltville priest sent a certificate to Kiedrich clearing the couple to be married there Stopford-19 22:57, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
  2. Casper's son's surname is misspelt "SHIPP" in the NSWBDM Marriage Index. See: Christian Schipp (1838-1897)
