Abstracts from The Catholic Telegraph June 30, 1855

FAIRFIELD COUNTY - Near Bremen, an aged German Catholic named Blasius Schmelzer, after reserving for himself and his good wife an ample resource for their coming years, which we pray may be long and happy, and giving a farm to every one of his six sons, presented to the Archbishop an eighty acre lot for a church and the support of a priest, and has begun the erection of a church to be completed at his own expense. It is to be dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. On the 18th of June a procession, chiefly comprised of this worthy man's numerous descendants, was formed at his residence, after Mass, celebrated by Rev. Mr. Lange, and it was truly a pleasing scene to behold the young and old moving through a beautiful vale and up a green and shady hill side to the spot selected for the church, where the workmen had already made considerable progress, and where, after an appropriate discourse, the Archbishop blessed and placed the corner stone.

On returning to the house the venerable old man read an address to the Archbishop, interrupted by abundance of tears of joy that God had enabled him to make Him an offering and deigned to accept it from his hands.
