Biography

Raymond was born Feb 4, 1911. He was the son of John Schmidt and Bertha Delfelder. As a youth he felt a calling to serve God in the priesthood and entered the seminary. He was ordained Jun 11, 1938 in Wichita, Kansas and was assigned to his first parish there as an assistant pastor. In 1941 he was assigned to Immaculate Conception parish in Burns, Kansas. His sister, Agnes Schmidt, accompanied him there as his housekeeper. In May, 1942, he officiated at her wedding to William Weber, one of his parishioners. On Oct 10 of that year he enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a chaplain and was later honorably discharged on May, 16, 1946. He then returned to parish work and served in several parishes in Kansas, including Winfield and Wellington. He was posted to his last parish, St Joseph's in Ost Kansas on Aug 31, 1961 where he served until his retirement on Oct 1, 1980. He retired to Ellinwood, Kansas where he passed away in 1992.
