Scott surname mentioned in Washington County, Virginia in "An American Family History: Cawood Families" (https://www.anamericanfamilyhistory.com/TennesseeFamilies&Places/Cawood%20Family.html : accessed on 07Oct2018 by Steve Lake) Stephen Cawood was born in 1724 in Maryland. His father was John Cawood. He married Esther Berry. Children; Berry Cawood (1747, married Nancy Ann Scott), Thomas Cawood (married Sally Scott)...
Moses Caywood was born on April 6, 1782. He married Tabitha McNew on January 29, 1807 in Washington County, Virginia. Children; Moses Caywood (1822, married Harriett Scott)...
October 7, 1814 Washington County, Virginia Deed Book 6: 12
Indenture between Lucy Cawood, wife of John Cawood, dec. & George Scott & Nancy, wife; John McNeal & Sarah, wife & Esther Cawood & Stephen Cawood, heirs of John Cawood, dec., one part & Daniel Arnett, other part for $62 & ½, 2 surveys adjoining and intersecting, viz, 39 acre patent to John Cawood, decd. And 150 acre patent to Saml. & James Bradin transferred to John Cawood, dec, in Rich Valley on North Fork Holston River, followeth the Braden Tract, supposed to be Walker's old line, cor. to Stephen Cawood's line
/w/ Wm. Scott; James McReynolds; Edw. McNew.
/s/ John McNeil; Sally McNeil; George Scott; Nancy Scott; Easter Cawood; Stephen Cawood; Lucy Cawood.

This may be George Scott 1785-1852 and Nancy Crawford 1785-??, m: 1808 Washington, VA.[1] This George was the son of William Scott & Mary Thackston. However Cawood and Crawford may in fact be two different families and there may be two different George Scott's. Indications are that William & Mary Thackston Scott lived in Bedford, VA and Davidson, TN, and possibly in Campbell, KY, but not in Washington, VA. A few of William's younger brothers were in Washington county and George may be one or more of their sons. We need to look into this.

Biography

The father of George has a proven marriage to Mary Thaxton in 1792 in Bedford county. Virginia. From Mary Thaxton Scott's 1816/1822 Will of Davidson county, Tennessee,[2] it is apparent that four of the children she lists as inheriting property and money from their father, must be children from William, Jr's first marriage and that the remaining six children are biologically Mary Thaxton Scott's. Further, if the Will list order is also the birth order, then George is the second oldest child of his father. The revised birth year estimate of William, Jr. is about 1750-1751 in Maryland, making his first marriage occurring after 1770 and lasting until he married Mary Thaxton in 1792. The oldest children were born from 1770-1792 during his first marriage and there were probably more than the four who were living in 1816, so using an average five year spacing, we come up with the following birth year estimates; William 1775, George 1780, Lucretia Patterson 1785 and Sarah Yeates 1790.

It must be pointed out that there may be some confusion regarding George's father's places of residence. William, Jr. appears to have been born in Maryland, went with his family at a young age to Bedford county, Virginia, then remained there during his first marriage and was married there a second time in 1792. His father seems to be in the 1796 Tax List in Campbell county, Kentucky. Some of Georges uncles went to Campbell county, Kentucky and some went to Washington county, Virginia. It does not appear that George or his father were in Washington, VA, but instead went to Davidson county, Tennessee, near Nashville. George probably had one or more cousins named George Scott in Washington, VA, so caution is necessary in order to avoid confusion.

Further details about this George Scott need to be sorted out.

Last Will and Testament of Mary Thaxton Scott

The original image of the 1822 court record of the contested 1816 Will is attached. The following is a first draft transcription. Please help with proofing and corrections, I know there are several words I couldn't decipher in the last two paragraphs, especially juror names.

1816/1822 Will of George's mother Mary has been analyzed and work needs to proceed for adding profiles for George's nine siblings. This Will is the necessary starting point for biological vs. step relationships, birth order and subsequent birth year estimates.

Mary's step-children were William (III), George, Lucretia Patterson and Sarah Yeates, all born before 1792. Mary's biological children were born after her marriage to William Scott, Jr. in 1792; Thomas, Sinkler (Sinclair), John, Moses, Polly and Rhoda.
