Laurell Lacy Scranton was born on 21 January 1896 in jJewett, Cumberland County, Illinois,[1] the son of John Nathan Scranton and Musetta Jodith Cutright.[2] He was the first of five children; his siblings were Nellie Clare, Mamie Helen, Norman Amos nd Corwin Lee. [3]
During World War I Laurel was a lieutenant of artillery for the US Army.
Laurel earned a doctorate in agricutural economics from Cornell University. He was a traveling consultant for the US Department of Agriculture on agricultural practices in other countries. When he retired he wrote books on the subject.[4],[5]
Laurell married Julia Ann Haberman on 9 May 1924, the daughter of Adolph E. Haberman and Louisa Marie Bittner. One note says they were driving to St. Louis to get married secretly, but saw the courthouse while traveling through Edwardsville and stopped there instead. They had no children.
Laurell died on 11 March 1971 in Sarasota County, Florida.[1][2] Julia died on 11 October 1988 in Sarasota. They are buried in the Harmony Cemetery in Greenup, Cumberland, Illinois.[2]
