Biography

Nicholas Hale "N.H." Scribner was born 1805 in Corinth, Orange County, Vermont. He was the son of Benjamin Scribner Jr. and Martha Knight.

In 1832, Nicholas married Nancy Baker Younger, the daughter of William and Nancy (Carter) Younger.

The couple had six children, five that lived to adulthood as follows:

Sarah Jane (Scribner) Morris (about 1833- )

Nicholas Hale Scribner (1835-1895)

Francis Worcester Scribner (1840-1905)

Willard M. Scribner (1843-after 1917)

William H. Scribner (1847-1849)

Martha Alice (Scribner) Brewer (1850-1896)

Some time before 1840, N.H. and Nancy left Vermont by covered wagon with their first two children, Sarah and Nicholas. They stopped in Licking County, Ohio, and N.H. appeared in the 1840 U.S. Census.

Two other children were born in Ohio: Francis and Willard Scribner.

Nicholas and his young daughter Sarah left to go to Iowa and arrived there late in 1842 in what is now Eddyville. They stayed the winter in order to be there when land opened in the Spring of 1843. His wife and the younger children came from Ohio to meet them at a later date. They owned the "Scribner House" in Iowa, sometimes known as the "Valley House", where people would stop to eat, rest and water their horses on the way out west. His daughter Sarah Jane (Scribner) Morris states in "OUR TOWN EDDYVILLE",that her father, Nicholas Hale Scribner Senior, built the first house in what is now Eddyville, and gave 2 acres to build Highland Cemetery. Sarah Jane stated "there were 3 people there when they got to "the town of Hardfishes", 2 of the 3 owned a trading post". It became named Eddyville later.

Nicholas and Nancy had their last two children, William and Martha in Iowa.

Nicholas died in 1876 at 71 years of age. His body is buried in the Highland Cemetery in Eddyville, Mahaska County, Iowa, along with his wife and several other relatives.
