He married Frances E. Blan on 17 July 1862 at Blount, Alabama, United States.[4] Over the years the couple had been blessed with five children who all survived until at least 1900.[3]
When the 1880 census was taken, John and Frances, with four children were living at Cullman, Alabama, United States[2]
At the time of the 1900 census John Self, his wife Frances, and two daughters were living on land that he owned at Pleasant Hill, Bavars, Cullman, Alabama, United States. [3] He must have been living somewhere near James H. Meadows (1878-) and his family.
Burial
John is buried at Hopewell Cemetery, Hanceville, Cullman County, Alabama, USA. [1]
