He married Janet Craig on 28 Jun 1849.[9] They had seven children. He emigrated to Ameica arriving on 4 Apr 1873 and was naturalized on 20 Oct 1892.[10]
No manifest has been found for Robert's travel to America. His 1900 census[7] claims he had been in the U.S. for 40 years or circa 1860. This conflicts with his 1861[4] and 1871[5] Scottish census records as well as the birth of several of his children. The 1910 census[8] is more realistic stating the year as 1872 and this is close to the date of arrival of 4 Apr 1873 listed on his naturalization record.[10]
