James Settle was involved in the westward expansion of the USA. See Westward Ho!.
In 1858, James traveled from Illinois to the Oregon Territory with his widowed mother Julia and brother George. They traveled by railroad to New York and from there by boat to the Isthmus of Panama. They crossed the isthmus in 9 days, during which time George was sick with typhoid fever and was carried by sling between two mules. They traveled by boat to the Columbia River and then by wagon to Linn County. The entire trip took about 3 months.[4]
In 1860, James was living in Linn County, Oregon with his mother, stepfather, brother, and step siblings. His future wife Harriet was a step sister, but not listed in the household.[5]
