Biography

Samuel S. Severns was born on the 17th of October 1794 in Monongalia County, Virginia (now West Virginia).

[SAMUEL SEVERNS, SON OF JOSEPH SEVERNS AND MARY (BUTLER or SEVERNS) According to grandson French W. Severns, Samuel was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Samuel Severns may have been born in Allegheny County, PA according to Virginia Mencer. Samuel, oldest son of Joseph, was living on the old family farm on Severns Ridge, New Castle Township, Coshocton County, Ohio and was about 84 years old according to a book written in 1876. Samuel held the rank of First Sergeant in the war of 1812; serving under Captain Isaac Meredith's company; OH Mil. as Sgt. (reference #SC-6095) He was in Detroit at the time of Hull's surrender, and after the war walked from that place to Coshocton County, Ohio where he farmed. "(Joseph's) oldest son, Samuel, is still living in the southern part of the township. He served in the War of 1812 and is probably the oldest person in the township, having reached his 86th birthday on the 17th of October, 1888." There is a Samuel Soverns listed in the 1820 Ohio census in Coshocton County #025, Ohio, Newcastle Township.
