When Sampson Shadley was born on July 7, 1796, in Frederick, Virginia, his father, John, was 36 and his mother, Docia, was 36. He had three sons and four daughters with Catherine Trump. He then married Sarah Garver and they had five children together. He died on February 9, 1862, in Hardin, Ohio, at the age of 65, and was buried in Alger, Ohio.
His first wife was Catherine Trump. They were the parents of seven children: Jacob, Ann, Hiram Sampson, Sampson, Jr., Lydia, Mary M. and Docia.
Following the death of Catherine, he married a widow, Sarah Garver Lyons and they were the parents of five children: John Henry, William Asa, Maria A., Sarah E and Israel Washington.
His remains were first buried on the family farm but later they were moved to Preston Cemetery.
Sampson was one of the first trustees of Marion Township, Ohio.
