Mary Jeanette (Shanklin) McPherson was born in 1827 in Bryan's Station, Logan County, Kentucky, the daughter of John Rayburn Shanklin (1776–1833) and Jennett (Green) Shanklin (1788/1793–1830).
Mary married James Willis McPherson (1827-1901) on 26 Mar 1846 in Winchester, Scott County, Illinois. Their children were:
