Gertrude was born in May 1890 in Missouri. She was the first child in her family.

Household members: Ira Smith (head, 44), Etta Smith (wife, 44), Amy Smith (no relationship listed, 22), Ruth Smith (no relationship listed, 11), Gertrude Sharp (no relationship listed, 49). Home was a farm, #127 on farm schedule, owned, value listed as $1500. Gertrude (but not rest of household) has additional farm schedule notation of #201.[7]
As of 1900, Gertie could read and write, and speak English. She attended school [1]
1940 census indicates that 8th grade was her highest education completed.[7]
In 1910, Gertie was a public school teacher. She was out of work on April 15, 1910, and had been out of work for 28 weeks in 1909.[2]
In 1920, Gertrude was a salaried public school teacher.[4]
In 1930, Gertrude was listed with occupation of "none", and was noted as the homemaker.[3]
1940 census lists her as engaged in "home housework". Wages or salary of 0 listed for 1939, but indicates "Yes" for receiving more than $50 from sources other than wages or salary.[7]
Gertie is listed as single in 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940 census.[2][4][3][7]
