Biography

Calvin was born in North Carolina in 1835. He was the son of James Sharp and Margaret Joyce. In 1863 Calvin married Mary Lucinda Pratt and together they were parents of four children. In 1864 Calvin enlisted in the Confederate Army as a Private in Co H North Carolina 13th Infantry Regiment. They farmed in Belews Creek for several years until sometime before 1880 when Calvin suffered an incident that left him an invalid for the rest of his life. He later lived in Winston-Salem where he passed away in 1916 at age 82.

  • EXCERPTED FROM WRITING ON CALVIN’S FINDAGRAVE SITE: “Mr. Sharp while still a young man moved to Belews Creek, where fifteen years he lived and worked on his farm. His labors, however, were there brought to an ened by sun stroke which left him an invalid for the rest of his life.”
  • 1880 Census asked “Is the person sick or temporarily disabled so as to be unable to attend to ordinary business activites?” with answer for Calvin written in ”Neurol...”. This information is consistent with note given above.
