Biography

William enlisted with the AIF (Australian Imperial Force) on 29 August 1914 and was in the 9th Battalion. They were in the first group to land at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 and was wounded (gunshot wound to right leg) but returned to duty. WES was admitted multiple times in 1916 for a hernia and refusing an operation in Egypt, returned to Australia for an operation in June 1916. The hospital report in Australia said they could “find no hernia” and he was returned to duty. WES transferred to the 18th Reinforcement of 26th Battalion when Gilbert (his younger brother) enlisted in December 1916. William was Killed in Action in Belgium on 5 October 1917.
