    Birth: Dec. 15, 1795
    Death: Jan. 20, 1888

"Death of Capt. Wm. SHAW-Capt. William SHAW, the widely known and venerable pioneer of Marion county, died at the residence of his son G. W. SHAW, on Howell Prairie, yesterday, Jan. 20, l888, at 6
    a.m. of general debility.
"Uncle Billy" SHAW, as he was familiarly known, was born in Tennessee, on December l5, l795, and he was therefore 92 years, l month, and 5 days old at the time of his death. At the age of l8 he enlisted with
the United States troops for the war of l8l2, and served during the two years of that struggle between the forces of England and his native country with great credit to himself. In l8l7 he removed to Missouri, in
various parts of which he resided until l844, when he joined the numbers of hardy pioneers whose faces were turned toward the great northwest, and who, with indomitable courage, unawed by danger and
undismayed by hardship, hewed out homes for themselves and their devoted families in the forests and on the prairies of the western wilds. He took up a donation claim on Howell Prairie in l846, and there was
his home until l876, when his wife, at a ripe age, was called before.
On January 9, l848, he left East Portland as lieutenant of a company belonging to the regiment of Col. Cornelius GILLIAM, his brother-in-law, bound for the Cayuse war. In the spring of that year, when on
their return from the scene of the Indian depredations, and at Wells' Springs, in what is now known at Morrow county, the sad accident occurred by which Col. GILLIAM lost his life. Capt. SHAW
accompanied the body to Polk county, Col. GILLIAM'S home, where he was buried.
The outrages in Eastern Oregon and Washington by the Cayuses continuing, Capt. SHAW raised a company of volunteers, and as captain returned to the scene of active operations, where he and his
    company performed efficient service.
In l850, he was elected a member of the territorial legislature, which then convened at Oregon City. He served one term with honor to himself and benefit to his constituents.
After his return from the legislature he pursued the uneventful career of farmer of his Howell Prairie donation until his wife died, and since that time he has lived with his children. About three months ago the health of the aged pioneer began to fail, and his final dissolution was the result of a general physical decline. He died full of years and the honors and respect which are ever allotted to the man whose whole career has been one of consistent integrity and Christian benevolence. Perhaps no pioneer in the whole state was better known and more widely respected than "Uncle Billy" SHAW. Though having lived far beyond the allotted three score years and ten, news of his demise will call forth from his legion of friends, especially his fellow pioneers, an universal acclaim of sorrow. He was for sixty five years an unswerving Christian of the Methodist denomination. He leaves three sons and a daughter-Judge J. C. SHAW, of Salem, G. W. SHAW of Howell Prairie, B. F. SHAW, of Vancouver, W. T. and Mrs. Mary SACKETT, of Jackson county.
The remains will be interred in the Howell Prairie burying grounds at l p.m. today, beside his beloved consort. The services will be conducted by Rev. N. DOANE. Oregon Statesman January 2l, l888.
