Biography

James was born on 6th October 1855 at Ballycoach in the parish of Kirkmichael, home of his mother's parents, James McFadzean and Agnes McCandlish. ^[1]

In 1861 James was 5 years old and living at Garryhorn, Maybole, the farm belonging to hisgrandfather, James McFadzean. He lived there with his parents, uncle James McFadzean, and siblings William and Walter. Also present were his cousin William Galloway, Janet Love, Margaret Taylor and David McCrone.^[2]

His grandfather died in 1867 and the farm fell to the care of James's father. In 1871 he was 14 years old living at Garryhorn, Maybole with his parents and siblings Walter, Agnes, John, Jane and Mary , his uncle James McFadzean and servants William Coughtrie, James Harrow, Elizabeth Faulds and Elizabeth McAlister. ^[3]

In 1883 James married Margaret Sharp in Kirkmichael, Ayrshire. ^[4]

In 1881 James was 26 years old and employed as a milkman at High Balsarroch, Dalrymple, Ayrshire. ^[5]

In 1891 James was 36 years old and employed as a farm servant at Spring Garden Farm, Fisherton, Ayrshire. He lived at Spring Garden Cottage with his wife Maggie and children, Agnes, Helen and Jane. ^[6]

In 1901 James was 45 years old and farming Spring Garden Farm himself.He lived there wth his wife Maggie and children Agnes, Jane, Maggie, Mary, James and William and his aunt, Jane Hunter, Jane McFadzean.^[7]

James died at Spring Garden, Fisherton on 22nd September 1924. ^[8]
