Matthew Albert Neil Shaw was born on 25 December 1870 in Bath, Jamaica, West Indies, to parents Angeline Wharton Dennis and Matthew Neil Shaw. His father was a shoemaker.[1][2][3]
He graduated from Calabar College in Bath.[4] He came to the United States in 1898.[5]
He was a general practice physician and Baptist clergyman in Boston. He graduated from Boston University Medical School in 1906.[6] He served as the minister of Twelfth Baptist Church in Boston from 1894–1922.[7]
He married Jessie E Johnson on 18 April 1900 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.[8]

Matthew Albert Neil Shaw passed away on 19 September 1923 in Boston.[12] At the time of his death, he was president of the National Equal Rights League and the United Front Race Conference. He was a member of the Colored Elks, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, and the Good Samaritans.[6] He was buried at Mt Hope Cemetery in Boston.[13]
