John William Sheffield was born on April 26, 1837 in St. Clair County, Alabama, USA. He was the son of Everett Sheffield (~1812–~1865) and Rebecca Elder (~1813–~1880).^[1]

In 1850, John Shuffield (13) was living with his parents Everett and Rebecca and his siblings in District 6, Itawamba County, Mississippi, USA. ^[2]

On 10 Jul 1858 John married Elizabeth J. Sims in Itawamba County, Mississippi.^[3]
