Hester was born in Ross County, Ohio in about 1831. She was the daughter of Richard Shepler and Margaret Wheeler. She married Daniel Smith on 28 December 1853 at Ross County, Ohio. They had seven children together. They moved to Illinois in about 1872. She died in Illinois on 6 April 1898 and was buried with her husband at Drummer Township Cemetery, Gibson City, Ford County, Illinois.
In 1840 Hester was likely the female under age 1 in the household of Richard Sheplar at Green Township, Ross County, Ohio. George Smith was listed nearby and was the father of Hester's future husband Daniel Smith.
Richard Shepler died in March of 1850.[1]
In 1850 Hefty Shepler was living at Green Township, Ross County in the household of Bazil and Julia A.Umstead and was recorded as 20 years old and born in Ohio. Julia (Haynes) Umsted was the sister of Hetty Shepler's sister-in-law, Eleanor (Haynes) McCollister Sheplar. [2] Hester's widowed mother Margaret Shepler was also living in Green Township.[3]
