Note

Note: Family legend holds that Harry and his brother William were actual partakers of an often held childhood dream. They ran away at an early age and joined the circus, performing as a trapeze act. It may have been on a tour with the circus that Harry met his first wife, Jessie French. It is known that her family did not approve of her choice of a mate and that the pair slipped away to an adjoining town for their marriage ceremony. A note here for those who may research this line: Harry's birth name was, in fact, Harry. The clerk in Stamford, Vermont refused to accept that as anything but a nickname and his marriage was recorded under the name Henry Sherman.
After an accident ended his performing days with the circus, Harry and his brother became trained in barbering and worked in shops together in Springfield and Amherst, Massachusetts. Harry also became a chiropodist and included a small foot-doctoring office at the rear of his barber shop in Amherst.
One story told of him is that he once refused to comply with the edict of the local union of barbers. When they called for an increase in the fee for a haircut and pressured him to go along and raise his rates, he removed his union certificate from the wall of the shop and tossed it, frame and all, onto North Pleasant Street in Amherst declaring, "There isn't a haircut in the world that's worth thirty-five cents!".
