Biography

Born in Plumstead because his father, James William Shields, was sent to Woolwich Arsenal for war work. Moved back to the Darlington area at 6 months. By the time of the 1921 census, he was living in Cleatlam village, and started school in Staindrop while still there (probably at Easter 1926). His parents were living separately for the latter part of the stay there. He then lived in Darlington until marriage, after which he lived with in Middlesbrough with the family of his wife, Joyce Fraser, until his death.^[1]

Albert was born on 14 August 1919, at 38 Sandy Hill Road, Plumstead, London. He was the 6th child born living from his parents (of 7), and at the time of his birth two of his elder siblings were alive. These three children were the only ones to survive early childhood.^[2]

He was in South Cleatlam by 1921. ^[3]

Albert Shields married Joyce Fraser on 16 February 1949 in St Thomas's Church, Brambles Farm, Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. ^[4]

Albert died in James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, in the presence of his wife and daughter on 9 May 1993, following a cerebral haemorrhage after treatment for a heart attack. ^[5]
